Background
The IoD is committed to supporting NFP directors by providing more accessible content, events and development opportunities to build capability for those in NFP governance. Programmes such as the Tuakana Teina Chairs Mentoring Programme (in partnership with Community Governance Aotearoa), our NFP Essentials courses and NFP Chairs Forum have set the foundations for the IoD in providing that support.
There are more than 115,000 NFP charities in New Zealand. Of the 10,500-strong IoD membership, 52% have at least one NFP role.
Two-way learning
Te Ara Tāwhaki recognises that to ascend with mana and govern with purpose, each individual brings valuable knowledge, wisdom and insights that others can learn from. This shared journey creates a mutually enriching experience for both mentors and mentees.
By the end of the programme, both parties will leave with an expanded worldview and wider networks.

Working with some of NZ's most experienced directors will be a great experience I expect will help me develop real-life, actionable and value-add governance skills, all helping me dial-up the already great work being done by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust.

As a wāhine Māori under 40, being named to the Te Ara Tāwhaki cohort signifies both opportunity and responsibility. It's a step toward building capability in strategy, oversight, and chairing through a people-first approach to governance. I see this as part of a longer journey to contribute to boards that lead with integrity, accountability, and care.
