The Health and Safety Scholarship is funding 10 places for IoD members who are directors on not-for-profit (NFP) boards.

Successful applicants will attend two courses in our health and safety governance programme:

1. Health and Safety Governance (2 hours)

This is a compulsory, self-paced online module where you will learn about good practice in health and safety governance, including directors’ duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Content includes: 

    • The importance of health and safety governance
    • Case studies
    • The health, wellbeing and safety governance landscape
    • Legislation
    • Duties and due diligence
    • Liabilities and penalties
    • The director’s role in establishing and monitoring best practice
    • Framework of director responsibilities
    • Worker engagement.

This module must be completed before attending the advanced course.

2. Advanced Health and Safety Governance (1-day)

This course explores your board’s health and safety obligations, with a focus on your own responsibilities. It includes a facilitated session using case law examples to bring governance concepts to life.

By the end of the course, you will feel confident in applying compliance measures to real-life situations involving  your staff, contractors and suppliers.

Content includes:

    • Understanding and identifying risk in your organisation
    • Applying the principle of ‘reasonably practicable’ in context
    • Managing overlapping responsibilities within your supply chain

Selected applicants can choose to attend this course either in person or online.

Application criteria

Applicants must meet all the following at the time of applying:

    • Have fewer than five years of governance experience
    • Have a sound understanding of the Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice
    • Be on a not-for-profit board (this should be your main governance role)
    • Be a member of the Institute of Directors NZ
    • Be available to travel to attend the course before the end of 2026. (The next scheduled course is 17 October 2025 in Wellington. The 2026 course dates are 27 March in Christchurch, 15 May in Auckland and 10 October in Wellington.
Eligibility

The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible to apply for the fund:

    • You have the right to remain in New Zealand to work and study for a period of at least five years
    • You do not have experience on a private family, commercial, large company, public sector or NZX-listed board
    • You are not currently participating in the IoD Emerging Directors, Mentoring for Diversity, Tautua Pasifika Mentoring Programme, or Future Directors® programme on a host board
    • You have read and understood the application above criteria and terms and conditions
