Jo Hay shares her governance journey, balancing farming, family and board roles with Trish Oakley.
Join us for a special Women Directors’ Lunch featuring a conversation between IoD President and UO Chancellor Trish Oakley CFInstD and Jo Hay MInstD, former Otago Southland Emerging Director Award winner and newly appointed farmer-director on the Silver Fern Farms Co-operative Board.
Jo's governance journey is one of commitment, continuous learning and purpose. From farming sheep and beef with her family near Oamaru to serving on the board of Meet the Need and participating in Silver Fern Farms' governance development programmes, she has steadily built a strong governance portfolio while balancing the demands of work, family and community.
In this candid discussion, Jo will share the lessons, opportunities and challenges that have shaped her governance career, including her recent appointment to the Silver Fern Farms Co-operative Board.

Trish Oakley is a purpose-led governance leader who combines a people-first approach with strategic oversight to drive organisational performance and positive outcomes.
She is President of the Institute of Directors and a Chartered Fellow. She brings over 25 years of experience from the financial services industry, working across marketing, product development and people focused roles.
Trish is Chancellor of the University of Otago, director of University of Otago Holdings Limited, a trustee of the Hocken Collection and the University of Otago Foundation Trust.
She is also a member of the New Zealand Lotteries Commission, holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Otago, and is a member of Global Women.
MInstD
Jo Hay is a North Otago sheep and beef farmer and the 2023 Institute of Directors Otago Southland Emerging Director Award winner. Alongside her husband and three children, she farms 710 hectares across two properties near Oamaru, working across both the strategic and operational aspects of the family business.
Jo has built a strong governance portfolio through a commitment to continuous learning and leadership development. She currently serves on the board of Meet the Need, North Otago Irrigation Company, and was recently appointed as a farmer-director on the Silver Fern Farms Co-operative Board, following her involvement in Silver Fern Farms' governance development programmes, including its Emerging Development Group for future governors.
Known for her strong sense of community, Jo enjoys connecting with people, building relationships and working collaboratively to achieve positive outcomes. She brings a practical, analytical and values-driven approach to governance, underpinned by respect, integrity, authenticity and contribution.
Passionate about the future of New Zealand's primary sector, Jo is focused on helping grow resilient businesses, thriving rural communities and a strong, sustainable food and fibre industry.
