Join this First Break panel event to learn from established directors on how they have developed their governance careers.
This First Break panel and networking event is designed around sharing useful steps, tips and trends for those in the planning, early and emerging stages of their governance journey. The theme for this year’s panel discussion is Boards leaning into the future: The key trends in governance.
Learn how our panellists have developed their portfolios and engaged with opportunities through the IoD to forge their governance careers. We’ll hear their experiences and thoughts on future trends and developments in the sector. Following the panel discussion you will have the opportunity to network with senior directors over drinks and canapés.

Brent is the director and chair of the Remuneration Committees of Yellow Pages Group and Devon Funds Management Limited. He is also a media consultant and a professional mentor. Previous board, consultancy and chief executive positions include: chair of The Radio Bureau, Television Broadcasters Council and Fred Hollows Foundation; director of Hutchwilco NZ, Freeview, Pumpkin Patch and Radio Broadcasters Association; on the management board of CanWest Global (operators of the FM Group); management consultant to Market Pulse International and the New Zealand Rugby Union; and media and business consultant to Gerson Lehrman Group. He was the director of strategy at Ports of Auckland (finished in 2021) and was also Chair of New Zealand Rugby (2014-2021). For eleven years he was CEO of MediaWorks NZ, and drive host on Radio Live (2010-2011). He was CE of Independent Broadcasting Group (1989-1992) and a partner at McElroy Milne Barristers & Solicitors (1984-1989) specialising in media law.
Brent is a Chartered Fellow of the IoD and joined the Auckland Branch Committee in 2013.

John has extensive business and governance experience. He has held over 27 directorships of which 12 were as Chair, and has been on both sides of the table having held CEO, GM and senior executive roles.
John has deep experience in high growth/high tech companies and is equally comfortable in a pre-revenue start-up, as Chair of a State-Owned Enterprise or mentoring the CEO of a multi-billion dollar insurance company.
Currently, he is Chair of Portainer.io, Cumulo9, Aeroqual, a director of Harmoney and has recently been appointed to the New Zealand Government's 'Strong Public Media' Establishment Board. Previous roles have included Chair of Kordia Group, Clearpoint Group, SMX Limited, FrameCAD Group, merlot.aero, WhereScape Software, Farm-IQ Systems and Axon Computers.
John is passionate about New Zealand companies and New Zealand citizens being globally competitive having represented New Zealand in Whitewater Kayaking and Ironman World Championships.
Julia Raue is an Independent Director for The Warehouse Group, Jade Software Corporation, Southern Cross Medical Care Society, Southern Cross Healthcare Limited, and Southern Cross Travel Insurance Limited. She is also Chair of the NZ Rugby Appointments & Remuneration Committee, and a Trustee of Global Women New Zealand. Julia has previously served on the Boards of Z Energy Limited and Television New Zealand Limited. Julia chairs a number of Board Committees including People, Culture & Remuneration; and Health, Safety & Wellbeing.
Prior to her Governance career Julia was the Chief Information Officer of Air New Zealand, and has extensive experience in digital, technology and business strategy and transformation across the airline, telecommunications and local government sectors, as well as not-for-profit in New Zealand.
Julia has overseen a number of world firsts in innovation, winning a number of local and global awards. She was awarded the NZ CIO of the Year award in 2009. Julia is passionate about growing the number of females working in technology, and works with a number of institutions to drive awareness of Information Technology as a career.
Kevin’s background in advertising and marketing involved 29 years with the global media agency, Starcom. In that time he spent 17 years living overseas in London, Hong Kong and New York. Kevin was the Worldwide Media Director of the ad agency DMB&B before going on to hold several executive positions with Starcom, including CEO of Global Operations, while based out of New York.
Kevin led Starcom’s two largest global clients, Coca-Cola and P&G. His global leadership role on the demanding Coca-Cola assignment lasted for 20 years and included wins in major markets such as the US, China and Russia. This role necessitated a strong digital and ‘what’s next’ appreciation in the ever-changing media and digital environment.
Kevin’s governance career began in 2016 where his advertising and marketing expertise is useful on the Boards of TVNZ (Deputy Chair), Kiwibank (Chair of the People, Remuneration and Culture committee) and NZ Cricket . He is also on the Board of the Halberg Foundation. Most recently Kevin has been appointed as the interim Chair of the new governance board overseeing Super Rugby Pacific.
