Come with a challenge. Leave with new thinking and insights, and greater confidence.
Good governance depends on the quality of thinking that happens before a decision is made.
Directors are expected to navigate complexity, challenge assumptions, ask better questions and make sound decisions — yet there are relatively few opportunities to deliberately practise those skills.
Issue processing creates a structured space for directors to slow down their thinking, examine an issue from different perspectives and resist the temptation to jump too quickly to solutions. The value is not simply in resolving the issue brought to the table; it is in practising the critical thinking, listening, questioning and decision-making disciplines that directors need in the boardroom.
Importantly, the methodology is also transferable. Directors can take elements of the process back into their own boards to create more rigorous conversations around complex issues, risks and opportunities.
