What would you have done if you were sitting at the White Star Line board table in April 1912?
In this exclusive member-only experience, participants will step into the boardroom before RMS Titanic’s maiden voyage and work through a reconstructed board paper based on the information, assurances and assumptions available to the directors at the time.
The ship is technologically advanced, regulatory requirements have been met, experienced professionals are confident and the commercial opportunity is significant. Your task is to govern before disaster has happened: identify the risks, test the assurances, challenge the assumptions and decide whether Titanic should sail.
Then you will leave the boardroom and walk the consequences.
Your experience includes entry to Titanic: The Human Story, the international exhibition currently in Auckland at the historic Smith & Caughey’s Building on Queen Street. The exhibition brings together more than 200 genuine objects and personal artefacts connected with Titanic’s passengers and crew, alongside photographs, handwritten letters, personal belongings and life-size recreations of the ship’s interiors. An immersive audio guide takes visitors through the stories of those on board and the events of April 1912, moving from the confidence and optimism surrounding Titanic’s departure to the human reality of what followed.
This is not a history lesson. It is an immersive governance experience exploring risk, assurance, compliance, culture, judgement and the questions boards ask (or fail to ask) before something goes wrong. Hindsight is 20/20; governance never is.
Designed exclusively for IoD members, this event offers a rare opportunity to test your boardroom judgement in a setting where the outcome is known to history, but not to you when the decision is made.

Kirsten Patterson MNZM (known as KP) is the Chief Executive of the Institute of Directors and is a Chartered Member of the IoD. In 2025 she was awarded the New Zealand Royal Honour, Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to governance and women. She is a qualified lawyer and a Distinguished Fellow of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand, a former chair of the Global Network of Directors Institutes (GNDI), and a member of the New Zealand External Reporting Advisory Panel (XRAP). She serves on the Boards of the mental health charity, Voices of Hope, is Chair of the Brian Picot Ethical Leadership Advisory Board at Victoria University in Wellington and an Ambassador for the Wellington Women’s Homeless Trust.
A strong advocate of diversity, KP is a member of Global Women New Zealand and was one of the founding members of Global Women’s ‘Champions for Change’, a group of senior executives and directors who commit to diversity in the workplace. KP was the founder and is Executive Sponsor for Chapter Zero New Zealand – the New Zealand Chapter of the World Economic Forum’s Climate Governance Initiative - hosted by the IoD NZ to mobilise, connect, educate and equip directors and boards to make climate-smart governance decisions, thereby creating long term value for both shareholders and stakeholders.
