Hear leading education governors discuss the challenges, opportunities and future of education governance.
Join the Nelson Marlborough Branch for an insightful discussion on the realities of governance in New Zealand's education sector. With increasing expectations from communities, ongoing policy change, financial pressures, workforce challenges and evolving learner needs, boards are operating in an increasingly complex environment. Effective governance has never been more important in supporting strong leadership, accountability and positive outcomes for learners.
Our panel features experienced governance and sector leaders Jill Bond MInstD, Chief Executive of New Zealand Kindergartens; David MacGibbon CMInstD, an experienced governor and education trustee; and Dr Caroline Seelig ONZM, Chief Executive of NMIT, with extensive leadership and governance experience across the tertiary education sector.
Together, they bring perspectives from across early childhood, school and tertiary education. The discussion will explore what makes governance in education unique, how boards can balance competing priorities, and the leadership capabilities needed to navigate change successfully. Attendees will gain practical insights into board effectiveness, stakeholder engagement, strategic oversight, financial stewardship and risk governance, while keeping learner success at the centre of decision making and building resilient, future-focused educational organisations.
MInstD
Jill Bond is a purpose-driven chief executive with more than 30 years’ leadership experience across New Zealand’s public and not-for-profit sectors. She is Chief Executive of New Zealand Kindergartens, where she leads a national network advocating for high-quality early childhood education.
Jill has held senior roles across health, education and housing, including Executive Director in the Office of the Director-General of Health, where she provided strategic and governance advice and contributed to the New Zealand Health Strategy.
Known for leading transformational change, Jill brings expertise in governance, stakeholder alignment and organisational performance. She is committed to developing leadership capability and enabling organisations to deliver sustainable, long-term impact.
CMInstD
David MacGibbon is Chief Executive of Sipcam New Zealand and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors (CMInstD), with extensive leadership experience across New Zealand’s primary industries, manufacturing and innovation sectors.
He has led organisations across start-up, growth and mature environments, with a strong focus on strategy development, execution and long-term value creation. David previously served as Chief Executive of Grosafe Group and has held senior leadership roles with ADAMA NZ, Agronica NZ and Crop Care.
Alongside his executive career, David has significant governance experience across commercial, not-for-profit and education sectors, and currently serves on several boards. He is recognised for his pragmatic approach to innovation, risk and stakeholder alignment.
NMIT Chief Executive
Caroline is an experienced tertiary education leader and brings a wealth of experience from across New Zealand, including organisations, educational boards, and consulting work.
Caroline has previously held roles at NMIT, including as deputy CEO and Academic Manager from 2000 to 2008. She was CEO of the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand from 2009 to 2022 and has most recently undertaken education specialist roles for UCoL and NorthTec. Caroline serves on the Commonwealth of Learning Board of Governors and Te Rautiaki Mātauranga and Te Pae Tawhiti Committees for Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
In 2024, she was awarded the rank of Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to tertiary, vocational, and online education.
