The impact of AI on governance in Aotearoa NZ - a call to action

Overview

How do directors in Aotearoa NZ see their role in governing AI? How does this differ to the response from boards globally, to academic and industry thinking and from the stated intent from regulators? Join us for a discussion on how directors need to be thinking about AI - spoiler alert: this is not about the use of AI to improve productivity, grow revenue and increase margins, nor is it about how AI will replace board directors and we will go well beyond AI Use policies and responsible / ethical AI. 

Leveraging insights from her Masters (Masters of Technological Futures, AcademyEX) research, including a recent survey of experienced NZ directors, Kim Gordon (MInstD, MAICD) will facilitate a panel discussion that will seek to identify the areas directors should be focusing on. The panel will include Kirsten (KP) Patterson,  experts from governance, AI and academia.

Kim has over 30 years technology advisory experience across commercial, procurement, strategy, governance, and legal roles. She was previously a partner at MinterEllison (Aus) and has held several not-for-profit, public, and private sector governance roles over a 20 year period. She is currently Deputy Chair of Lotto NZ, a director on the boards of ACC, The Co-operative Bank, Co-operative Life and Care Group and a trustee of the Auckland Softball Foundation Charitable Trust.  

Kim holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Auckland. She is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. 

Kirsten (KP) Patterson

CMInstD

Kirsten Patterson MNZM (known as KP) is the Chief Executive of the Institute of Directors and is a Chartered Member of the IoD. In 2025 she was awarded the New Zealand Royal Honour, Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to governance and women.  She is a qualified lawyer and a Distinguished Fellow of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand, a former chair of the Global Network of Directors Institutes (GNDI), and a member of the New Zealand External Reporting Advisory Panel (XRAP).  She serves on the Boards of the mental health charity, Voices of Hope, is Chair of the Brian Picot Ethical Leadership Advisory Board at Victoria University in Wellington and an Ambassador for the Wellington Women’s Homeless Trust.  

A strong advocate of diversity, KP is a member of Global Women New Zealand and was one of the founding members of Global Women’s ‘Champions for Change’, a group of senior executives and directors who commit to diversity in the workplace. KP was the founder and is Executive Sponsor for Chapter Zero New Zealand – the New Zealand Chapter of the World Economic Forum’s Climate Governance Initiative - hosted by the IoD NZ to mobilise, connect, educate and equip directors and boards to make climate-smart governance decisions, thereby creating long term value for both shareholders and stakeholders.
