Overview

Stepping into governance can feel unclear and inaccessible, particularly for women navigating pathways that are often informal, network-driven and shaped by unspoken expectations. Yet strong governance is built, not inherited, and capability develops through learning, experience, support and opportunity.

Drawing on governance research, this webinar explores practical ways women can build governance confidence, capability and visibility over time and how boards and organisations can help create more inclusive governance pathways. Hosted by the Institute of Directors and the Manatū Wāhine Ministry for Women, the session features Judene Edgar MNZM CMInstD sharing insights from her research into governance pathways and women’s experiences of stepping into governance roles, alongside practical guidance and resources to support governance development.

The discussion will explore:

  • how governance capability develops
  • some of the barriers women continue to face
  • the role of mentoring, sponsorship, networks and governance learning
  • practical ways to strengthen confidence and visibility for governance roles
  • how boards and organisations can support more inclusive governance pathways

Attendees will also be introduced to practical governance tools, professional development resources and approaches that can support ongoing governance growth, including insights from the IoD’s Getting on board with diversity guide.

Whether you are exploring your first board role or looking to grow your governance experience, this webinar will provide practical insights, tools and encouragement to support your next step into governance.
