Overview

Strong governance is grounded in lived experience, culture, values and a commitment to those who come after us.

Join us for an evening of kōrero, connection and inspiration as we explore the experiences, values and aspirations that shape Māori leadership and governance in Aotearoa.

We are privileged to hear from Justin Tipa, Chairman of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Chairman of Te Rūnanga o Moeraki. Justin will share his personal pathway into governance and leadership, the people and experiences that have influenced his approach, and his perspectives on the future of Māori leadership and governance.

This is an opportunity to hear directly from an experienced Māori governance leader and reflect on insights that may inform your own governance practice - whether you are already serving on a board, considering your first governance role, working alongside boards, or seeking to deepen your understanding of Māori perspectives on leadership and governance.

Celebrating emerging Māori leadership

The evening will also provide an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the next generation of Māori governance leaders.

We will hear from Te Teira Pitama, inaugural recipient of the Institute of Directors Canterbury Aspiring Māori Director Award, as he reflects on his development, experiences and learnings over the past 12 months.

We will also present the 2026 Canterbury Aspiring Māori Director Award, recognising emerging Māori leadership and its contribution to the future of governance in Aotearoa.

Whether you are Māori or non-Māori, an experienced director, an aspiring governance leader, a professional working alongside boards, or simply curious to learn and connect, all are welcome.

Come along for an evening of whakaaro, kōrero and whakawhanaungatanga as we celebrate Māori leadership, share governance journeys and look towards the future.

Justin Tipa

Justin Tipa (Ngāi Tahu) is the elected Kaiwhakahaere (Chair) of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. He joined the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Board in 2021 when he was appointed the representative for Te Rūnanga o Moeraki.

Justin has a background in language revitalisation, education, and iwi organisational and economic development, and is widely respected for his deep knowledge of Ngāi Tahu traditions and culture, particularly in relation to the natural environment and mahi kai.

Prior to being elected Kaiwhakahaere of Te Rūnanga, Justin spent seven years working for Fonterra, where he played a key strategic leadership role in strengthening Fonterra's engagement with the Māori economy.

Justin's blend of cultural, governance, and corporate experience makes him uniquely suited to lead Ngāi Tahu as the Chair of its collective governance body.

Te Teira Pitama

MInstD

Te Teira Pitama (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu) is a solicitor in the commercial and corporate team at Simpson Grierson. Originally from Ōtautahi, he attended Christchurch Boys’ High School before completing a Bachelor of Arts in Māori and Indigenous Studies and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of Waikato.

Te Teira currently serves on the board of Te Poho o Tamatea, having joined in October 2024. His governance journey is grounded in a deep commitment to kaupapa Māori and a desire to use his legal and commercial skills to uplift hapū and iwi. He is driven by values of service, integrity, and intergenerational impact.

As a young professional in governance, Te Teira recognises the importance of representation and hopes his journey encourages other rangatahi to step into leadership roles early and bring their unique perspectives to the boardroom. He is committed to growing his governance capability and contributing to high-performing organisations that deliver meaningful outcomes for their communities and Aotearoa as a whole.
