Join us for a fireside chat with the Ministry of Health’s Chief Science Advisor, Ian Town.
Ian Town CMInstD, the Ministry of Health’s Chief Science Advisor through the Covid-19 pandemic, joins us to provide insights on this global pandemic, exploring the impact of Covid-19 on society, healthcare systems and governance.
Join us for a frank discussion on what the future looks like in a post-pandemic environment, the approach to governance in a time of crisis, and how we can be better prepared for the future.
Fireside chats are story-based, small group events where questions and discussion are actively encouraged. Due to the potentially sensitive nature of matters discussed, the Chatham House Rule will apply. Numbers are strictly limited.
Ian Town has worked across both the health and education sectors during his 30-year career. A physician by training, he has published extensively in respiratory medicine. Much of this research has been implemented through evidence-based guidelines for the management of common conditions such as asthma, COPD and pneumonia.
Following an 8-year period at the University of Canterbury as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ian had a wide range of roles including Chair of the Performance Based Research Fund Sector Reference Group and Chair of the Tertiary Education Commission PBRF Governance Group overseeing the 2018 Quality Evaluation. He was also the Chair of Te Papa Hauora/Christchurch Health Precinct Advisory Council, advising on the post-earthquake rebuild, for five years.
Ian was appointed as Chief Science Advisor to the Ministry of Health in July 2019, leading the Ministry’s work to implement the New Zealand Health Research Strategy 2017–2027 in partnership with MBIE and the HRC. When Covid-19 arrived in New Zealand, his background in respiratory medicine led to his advising full-time on the New Zealand response to Covid-19. He is now the strategic lead for the new Evidence Research and Innovation Directorate within Manatu Hauroa | Ministry of Health.
