Join us to hear from a diverse panel representing the transformational journeys they are taking to bring a Māori world view into their policy, culture and engagement, and the reasons why they are doing so.
This panel discussion builds on the inaugural Māori governance forum ‘Te Huarahi Hōu’ held in 2021.
Our speakers represent a Crown entity, Māori Trust Board and an independent company. They share stories around the steps they are undertaking and the outcomes that they are experiencing by engaging with mana whenua and embracing bi-cultural philosophies.
What might your governance pathway look like as you honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and what benefits can your board bring from implementing new, culturally responsive ways of working?

Dr Jim Mather is of Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe and English descent. He grew up in the communities of Te Teko, Ōtara and Māngere.
Previously he was the Chief Executive of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (New Zealand’s second largest tertiary institution) for five years. This followed a nine-year tenure as Chief Executive of Māori Television, and prior to that he was Chief Executive of the Pacific Business Trust for almost three years.
Jim’s current governance roles include chair of Radio New Zealand and Lakes District Health Board, director of Auckland Transport, Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Limited and NZ Health Partnerships. He is also the chair of two educational trusts, Ako Mātātupu | Teach First NZ and InZone Education Foundation.
He is a member of the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand and a Chartered Member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors.
Jim Mather is passionate about Māori economic development and contributing to the strengthening of Māori governance and leadership practices. He completed a PhD in Māori economic development through AUT University in 2014.
Tina is the Chief Executive of the Earthquake Commission - Kōmihana Rūwhenua.
Tina has over 25 years’ experience delivering, leading and transforming professional services across a range of industries in both the public and private sectors. Her background includes insurance and financial services, dispute resolution, policy and legal services.
Prior to her appointment as CE, Tina was part of the executive team and responsible for EQC’s policy, government relations, communications, media, stakeholder engagement and legal services. Tina led the development of EQC's strategy, implementation of recommendations from the Public Inquiry into EQC, support for the Treasury and Minister in reviewing EQC’s governing legislation and work to grow EQC’s cultural capability and understanding of te ao Māori.
Tina’s passion for good customer outcomes and fairness was shaped by her early career working for the Health and Disability Commissioner and a decade in leading national law firms in New Zealand and Canada
Gareth Marriott is the Australia & New Zealand managing director of global facilities management services company, OCS.
Gareth’s extensive corporate career, building strong teams and driving growth, has set the scene for ensuring OCS has survived and thrived during the last two years. With a focus on putting people at the centre of all of his decision-making and embracing disruption, Gareth has led his team with strength and empathy through the complexities of operating an essential service during a pandemic.
Gareth is also a member of the Sustainable Business Council of New Zealand and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Modern Slavery Advisory Group which brings to life his passion for the people in the community.
Marama is currently Chair of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust holding this role since 2017 and as a director since 2010. Marama holds other Chair and Directorship roles across a variety of organisations; Co-Chair at SkyCity Community Trust, Director at Variety - Children's Charity, Trustee at Ranginui 12 Trust, and Council Member at AUT.
Marama has also been appointed to the boards of MIT and Unitec until Dec 2022.
Marama has extensive experience in strategic planning, relationship management, leadership, governance, and organisational change in the justice, horticulture, international aid, charitable and community sectors. She has an extensive and impressive network in both local and central government and the not for profit social service sector. During her career, Marama has held senior management roles at Ministry of Justice and with Victim Support at both regional and national levels.
Marama is passionate about achieving positive outcomes for whānau especially kaumatua.
