Nowadays, it is impossible not to engage with Māori but it’s a complicated space even for Māori to navigate.
We are grateful to Mike for leading this session and sharing his governance insights on what engaging effectively with Māori looks like. He will also touch on aspects of the legislative framework and working with mana whenua that directors need to know about and how directors can build the relationships they need, to ensure good governance and be mindful of cultural courtesies.
Mike has 20 years extensive governance and director experience including chairing Te Haaro governance board of Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga (TToH). TToH is a community leader, a not-for-profit Charitable Trust, and a mandated political leader of Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga.
He has recently been appointed as co-chair of the Hawke's Bay Regional Council Māori Committee and previously sat on the board of Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc for a period of nine years. He also holds a range of other governance appointments with local government agencies and is an associate of numerous committees in various capacities.
Mike says servicing his Ruahāpia marae and hapū for 45-years has been a real privilege and his proudest achievement.
