An evening of connection, celebration and inspiration, featuring guest speaker Dr Jim Mather CFInstD.
The Otago Southland branch committee warmly invite you to an evening celebrating governance excellence, featuring the presentation of the 2026 Emerging Director Award and special guest speaker Dr Jim Mather.
Following another strong year of applications, we look forward to announcing and celebrating the recipient of the 2026 Emerging Director Award, recognising an emerging governance leader from across the southern region. The evening will also be an opportunity to celebrate another successful year for the Otago Southland Branch, reflect on the connections and achievements of our governance community, and thank those who have contributed their time and expertise throughout the year.
Our guest speaker for the evening is Dr Jim Mather CFInstD, a highly respected professional director, governance leader and advocate for Māori economic development. With an extensive career spanning executive leadership, governance and military service, Jim has held chief executive roles with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Māori Television and the Pacific Business Trust, and currently serves on a wide range of private, government and iwi boards. A Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors, Jim brings a wealth of governance experience and a unique perspective on leadership, purpose and creating value for communities.
This year's cocktail function will be held at Vigo Customhouse Restaurant, offering a relaxed and welcoming setting to conclude the year and recognise the achievements of our 2026 Emerging Director Award finalists and winner.

Dr Jim Mather is of Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe, Te Whakatōhea and English descent, and grew up in the communities of Te Teko, Ōtara and Māngere.
A member of the Chartered Accountants of New Zealand/Australia and Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors (IoD), Jim has been a professional director and the founder of a specialist Māori development consultancy, holding a Master of Business Administration from the Henley Business School in England and a Bachelor of Business Studies (Accounting). He also completed a PhD in Māori economic development through AUT University in 2014.
With business management experience spanning 25 years, Jim has held a variety of private sector roles and currently holds numerous governance roles within private, government and iwi organisations. In 2018 he completed his final Chief Executive role with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (New Zealand’s second largest tertiary institution) after a 5-year term. This followed a 9-year tenure as Chief Executive of Māori Television, and prior to that he was Chief Executive of the Pacific Business Trust for almost 3 years.
Jim is passionate about Māori development and contributing to the strengthening of all entities that he is entrusted to support in either advisory or governance roles.
Aligned with his commercial background, Jim is also a former officer in the New Zealand Army and was awarded the Sword of Honour in recognition of his distinguished achievements in Officer training. He served for six years in the NZ Army before leaving to further his career and educational aspirations.
