Drawing on new research with more than 100 directors, this webinar explores what New Zealand is getting right (and wrong) about governance pathways.
Strong boards don’t just happen — they are built through clear pathways, inclusive recruitment and ongoing capability development. Drawing on new research with more than 100 directors, this session explores what New Zealand is getting right (and wrong) about governance pathways, and what directors can do in their own boards to strengthen succession planning, reduce barriers and build the next generation of capable directors.
In conversation with IoD’s Guy Beatson, director Judene Edgar will share insights from her governance research, which combines survey data and interviews with Māori and Pasifika wāhine directors. The research highlights the importance of education, mentoring, sponsorship and networks in shaping pathways, while also exposing the risks of over-reliance on shoulder-tapping and under-investment in board capability. The session will also draw on a review of international practices, comparing how other jurisdictions approach director training, pathways and governance development. This wider lens offers valuable lessons for New Zealand directors, helping them see how global trends can inform local action.
For directors, the takeaways are practical: how board evaluations, induction, mentoring and recruitment processes can be used to open doors and strengthen capability. The conversation will also explore examples from overseas to consider what Aotearoa might adopt to future-proof governance.
