Overview

Nature is increasingly becoming a strategic governance issue, influencing organisational resilience, asset performance, supply chains and long-term value creation.

This webinar will explore what it means to treat nature not solely as a risk, but as an asset that can be measured, monitored and actively managed over time.

Building on the growing focus on resilience, adaptation and natural infrastructure highlighted through initiatives such as the Natural Infrastructure Plan, this session shifts the conversation from awareness towards implementation and practice.

Drawing on Chapter Zero Sponsors, Boffa Miskell’s practical experience across infrastructure, energy, land use and natural systems, alongside governance perspectives from directors working through these issues, the discussion will explore how organisations are establishing baseline visibility of natural assets, tracking performance over time, and using nature-related information to inform governance, strategy and investment decisions.

Sam Parsons

Sam is a nature and climate change resilience specialist with experience in nature-related risk assessments, nature-based solutions, and nature strategy development across government, community, and private sector organisations.

Sam leads Boffa Miskell’s Nature and Climate Change discipline, working collaboratively across Boffa Miskell’s landscape, urban design, planning, ecology, and biosecurity teams to help clients to understand and manage their nature-related risks and opportunities. Particularly in understanding physical and ecosystem service risks, developing nature-based adaptation options and natural infrastructure, improving asset and portfolio nature resilience, and increasing the integration of nature into risk and investment decisions. With a strong background in practical environmental conservation and climate adaptation, Sam advocates a strong nature-based approach in the delivery of sustainable and resilient places and spaces for people and natural ecosystems to thrive.

Louise Saunders

Louise has led the Manaaki Kaimai Mamaku Trust since 2021 following a career as a consulting ecologist and environmental scientist. The Trust is tasked with coordinating restoration of the Kaimai Mamaku ranges and catchments, a 260,000ha landscape that supports significant regional economies and protects built infrastructure and communities. Louise and her team work alongside iwi-hapu restoration teams to build capability, share knowledge and drive collective action. In recent years, she has been actively involved in developing finance instruments and markets to enable sustainable funding and support business investment in nature.

Judene Edgar (facilitator)

CMInstD

Judene is a Principal Governance Adviser with the Institute of Directors’ Governance Leadership Centre and Chapter Zero NZ lead providing best practice advice, guidance and advocacy for directors. She is also chair of the Nelson Historic Theatre Trust, deputy chair of the Rātā Foundation, and a trustee for the Network Tasman Trust.

Prior to joining the IoD she ran her own consultancy for over 20 years, specialising in governance, policy, strategy and communications working across a wide range of sectors, including housing, health, solid waste, aviation, energy, not-for-profit and infrastructure. 

Judene was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to governance, local government and the community in the 2026 New Year Honours. She was a local government elected member for 12 years and a director on a range of private and public entity boards. She has a background in behavioural science and communications and is a Chartered Member of the IoD.
