Join us in Timaru for a panel discussion on unlocking regional productivity and enabling long-term economic decisions
How can directors help enable regional economic change while maintaining a focus on long-term productivity and resilience? Join a panel of South Canterbury leaders as they share practical insights on navigating local challenges, aligning stakeholders, and making decisions that support sustainable growth.
This discussion will explore the role of governance in unlocking productivity, fostering collaboration between public and private sectors, and responding to evolving regional priorities. Panellists bring perspectives from a variety of sectors, offering a well-rounded view of the opportunities and constraints facing the region.
This event is ideal for directors and business leaders seeking to better understand how governance can support regional prosperity through informed, long-term decision-making.
Mayor of Timaru, MInstD
Timaru-born and raised, Nigel Bowen has deep community roots.
Nigel and his wife, Jane, are local business owners and have two daughters. His longstanding involvement in the district gives him a strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing local people, businesses and communities. After serving as a Timaru District Councillor, he was first elected Mayor in 2019 and was re-elected in 2025 for a third term.
As Mayor, Nigel is committed to strengthening local decision-making and ensuring communities have a meaningful voice in the issues that affect them. His priorities include responsible financial management, long-term infrastructure planning, economic development and securing fair investment for regional New Zealand.
Nigel is also Chair of the Canterbury Mayoral Forum. In this role, he supports Canterbury’s mayors and the Chair of Environment Canterbury to advocate with a strong, coordinated voice on regional priorities, including infrastructure, economic prosperity, resilience and local government reform.
Nigel’s focus is on helping the Timaru District remain a vibrant, connected and resilient place where people, communities and businesses can thrive.
