Ramp up your governance career and prepare to pick up a governance role or two or move into a bigger role.
Whether you’re looking to gain further directorships or you’re a seasoned executive looking for your first role, this workshop will provide you with practical insights on how to promote and equip yourself to succeed.
Senior directors will share their insights into how to win board appointments, hot topics that are a focus around board tables, and share stories that illustrate real boardroom challenges.
Your experienced facilitators will convene small-group open discussions focussed on the following discussion topics:
1. Understanding your value proposition
2. The different types of directorships
3. Building your career as a professional director
4. Growing your networks

Workshop numbers are limited to 28 participants, with four senior directors leading discussion tables. A working lunch is provided.

Dr Jim Mather is of Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe, Te Whakatōhea and English descent, and grew up in the communities of Te Teko, Ōtara and Māngere.
A member of the Chartered Accountants of New Zealand/Australia and Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors (IoD), Jim has been a professional director and the founder of a specialist Māori development consultancy, holding a Masters of Business Administration from the Henley Business School in England and a Bachelor of Business Studies (Accounting). He also completed a PhD in Māori economic development through AUT University in 2014.
With business management experience spanning 25 years, Jim has held a variety of private sector roles and currently holds numerous governance roles within private, government and iwi organisations. In 2018 he completed his final Chief Executive role with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (New Zealand’s second largest tertiary institution) after a 5-year term. This followed a 9-year tenure as Chief Executive of Māori Television, and prior to that he was Chief Executive of the Pacific Business Trust for almost 3 years.
Jim is passionate about Māori development and contributing to the strengthening of all entities that he is entrusted to support in either advisory or governance roles.
Aligned with his commercial background, Jim is also a former officer in the New Zealand Army, and was awarded the Sword of Honour in recognition of his distinguished achievements in Officer training. He served for six years in the NZ Army before leaving to further his career and educational aspirations.

Jonathan is Vice President of the Institute of Directors, a Chartered Fellow and sits on the IoD National Council. Jonathan’s experience in financial markets over the past 30 years has had a strong emphasis on emerging markets and he has extensive governance experience in New Zealand and the United States. Previous directorships include Air New Zealand and Vector Ltd. He is currently chair of Dilworth School for Boys, NZ US Council and a director on the board of Zespri Group Ltd, and will be joining the board of Fonterra as an independent director in October 2026.

Mary-Jane (“MJ”) is Chair of AIG Insurance New Zealand Limited, Chair of the Fonterra Shareholders Fund, Chair of Partners Life and an Independent Director of Kiwibank Limited. She is also a member of the MBIE Risk and Advisory Committee. She has served on the boards of Kiwi Property, Auckland Transport, Toka Tu Ake EQC, Cigna Life Insurance, Airways Corporation of New Zealand, and the New Zealand Green Building Council.
In her executive career, MJ worked mainly in banking and insurance in a variety of roles both in New Zealand and the UK. Her last executive role was as Executive General Manager at State Insurance. Prior to this appointment, she was Chief Financial Officer for IAG in NZ.

Sheridan Broadbent is a New Zealand-based infrastructure leader and director, specialising in mission-critical infrastructure governance across communications, electricity, construction, maritime and space support networks. Sheridan is the Chair of the New Zealand Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum - which comprises 440+ of New Zealand’s leading CEOs driving safer and more productive workplaces in New Zealand.
She is also a director of ASX-100 listed Downer Group (ASX:DOW), where she is chair of the Zero Harm Committee, and a member of the People and Culture and Project Governance Committees. Sheridan is a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Directors and an Graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
