What directors told us in 2024

The 2024 Director Sentiment Survey, produced by the Institute of Directors and ASB, found confidence on the economy at the highest level since the survey began in 2014.

Key findings:

    • 52.2% of respondents expected the economy to improve over the next 12 months, up from just 28.3% in 2023
    • 41.6% directors identified cost of living/inflation as the main risk to the economy
    • When it came to their own organisations, low consumer demand (14.7%), and political/policy uncertainty (14.5%) were the most widely perceived risks
    • Technology and innovation was the go-to topic when directors were asked about the focus areas for their boards in 2025

The report is based on responses from 1,240 IoD members, of whom 58.1% of respondents had at least five years experience as a director/governing body member, with 32% having more than 10 years experience and, of the directors currently in a board role, 46% were board or committee chairs.
