Climate Governance Credential
Climate literacy is a key area where lifelong learning is essential for directors. As organisations face growing expectations to navigate climate-related risks and opportunities, directors who proactively build their knowledge in this space demonstrate strong leadership and governance.
Supported by Chapter Zero New Zealand, the home of climate governance at the IoD, we are proud to launch our first digital credential, the Climate Governance Credential.
This credential allows directors to visibly demonstrate their annual commitment to climate governance learning. It is available exclusively for IoD members and is valid for one year from the date of issue. To maintain this credential, members need to reapply on an annual basis to demonstrate they have met the criteria.
To qualify, directors must log 10 CPD points in climate-related learning. This must include a minimum of seven structured learning points and allows up to three points from unstructured learning. The 10 CPD points can come from your existing 20 CPD-point requirement.
This credential is a visible commitment to responsible governance. By showcasing your learning, you signal to key stakeholders – including investors, regulators, insurers, customers and employees – that you understand your duties in addressing climate-related challenges and opportunities.
When you have logged the required CPD points, you can claim your digital credential by completing the form linked below. You will need to be logged in as an IoD member to submit your application. Once your application is approved, you will be issued a digital badge through Credly.
What are the criteria to receive the Climate Governance Credential?
10 CPD points are required to meet the Climate Governance Credential requirements, with a minimum of seven structured and a maximum of three unstructured CPD points. The 10 CPD points can be part of your existing 20 CPD point requirement.
How far back can I have done my learning to claim my credential?
Your climate governance learning must have been done in the last year from date of application.
What qualifies as 'structured learning'?
You need to do seven hours of structured learning. Structured learning is any learning experience that is planned and organised in classroom-based courses, e-learning courses, workshops, and seminars.
For example:
- completion of any climate course, including IoD’s Climate Change Governance Essentials
- attendance at an IoD/Chapter Zero climate branch or national event or forum
- attendance at non-IoD climate related events or forums
- attendance at live climate related webinars/webcasts (this is not limited to IoD offerings)
If you have booked and attended any course or event through the IoD website, your CPD points will automatically be logged for you on your member profile. If you have undertaken activities with other providers, please self-log these CPD points, with a note that climate is the key subject.
What qualifies as 'unstructured learning'?
You need to do three hours of unstructured learning. This is a learning experience that is not planned and does not have an organised progression.
For example:
- reading Chapter Zero newsletters
- governance reading on climate related matters
- watching any on demand climate webinars or webcasts
- any whole of board development such as upskilling in climate related matters or involvement in a board activity related to climate e.g. a governance project or establishing reporting frameworks
- attending climate related conference session
You must self-log these CPD points, with a note that climate is the key subject. Please note that these activities can be undertaken with other providers.

How long will it take for me to get the Climate Governance Credential badge?
We aim to assess your application and confirm whether you meet the criteria for the Climate Governance Credential within five working days.
How long is the Climate Governance Credential badge valid for?
The CGC badge expires one year following issue. To maintain your credential you will need to reapply on an annual basis.
Who can claim a Climate Governance Credential badge?
This badge is exclusively available to Members, Chartered members and Chartered Fellows.
Is the badge sent to me?
Our badges are issued via Credly. Credly is a badging provider who we are using to manage the provision of the Climate Governance Credential badge (and any future badges). Credly will send you an email confirming that you have been awarded the Climate Governance Credential badge.
