The second emissions budget (for 2026-2030) has been set, but the Government needs a plan to deliver on it. He Pou a Rangi Climate Change Commission’s role is to provide independent, evidence-based advice on the direction of policy, taking a systems-wide view. The Commission last provided advice like this in the 2021 report Ināia tonu nei.

The Commission has developed draft advice to cover the second emissions budget period, from 2026-2030. This draft advice is now open for public consultation between April and June 2023. The final advice will reflect the feedback the Commission receives through the engagement process and will be delivered to the Government at the end of 2023.

In this online session, we will hear from Climate Change Commission Deputy Chair Lisa Tumahai about the draft advice, with a specific focus on the role of directors in addressing the proposed recommendations for the Government’s second Emissions Reduction Plan. There will be particular emphasis on the role of key sectors such as energy, transport, manufacturing and agriculture.

This will be followed by a panel discussion with Climate Change Commission Deputy Chair Lisa Tumahai, General Manager of Sector Analysis Barry Anderson and Acting Manager Buildings, Industry, Transport & Energy Alexandra Aimer-Seton. The panel will provide a deeper dive into some of the governance-level challenges, followed by audience Q&As.
