Overview

Courage & commitment, purpose & values, and culture & inclusion underpin board leadership and set the tone for an organisation.  In a discussion facilitated by Susan Paterson, our panel will share their key experiences on building and achieving successful board character, including challenges they have faced, in a modern context. 

Panellists

Tony Carter

Tony Carter was Managing Director of Foodstuffs New Zealand Ltd for 10 years until he retired in 2010. Tony is currently Chair of Datacom Ltd, My Food Bag Group Ltd, Skin Institute,  The Interiors Group and TR Group Ltd, and a director of Vector Ltd.

He was previously Chair of Air New Zealand Ltd until 2019 and Chair of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Limited until August 2020. Tony was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2020.

Pip Greenwood

Pip was appointed a Director of Westpac NZ in April 2019 and Board Chair in October 2021. She’s also a Director of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, The A2 Milk Company, Vulcan Steel and a trustee of the Auckland Writers Festival. She was previously a director of Spark NZ.  She was also previously a Senior Partner at law firm Russell McVeagh, where she spent over ten years on the firm's Board including acting as the firm's Board Chair, as interim CEO and Head of Corporate Advisory.

A leading figure in the business community and in the field of corporate law, Pip is known for her work promoting greater diversity.  She is the recipient of numerous industry awards, winning NZ Dealmaker of the Year at the Australasian Law Awards five times. She has twice been recognised as a finalist at the Women of Influence Awards.

Sir Rob McLeod 

Sir Rob McLeod has over 40 years commercial experience and is a Lawyer and Fellow Chartered Accountant.  He is currently Chairman of Sanford Ltd, Quayside Holdings Ltd and Ngati Porou Holding Company Ltd and a director of Port of Tauranga Ltd.  He has extensive governance experience having sat on boards of both public and private companies and is also the retired EY CEO Australasia, Lead Negotiator of the treaty settlement between the NZ government and Ngati Porou, and retired Chair of the NZ Business Roundtable.  Sir Rob is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors. 

Facilitator

Susan Paterson

Susan has been a professional director since 1996. She is chair of Steel and Tube and Theta Systems Ltd. Her other directorships include the Reserve Bank, Arvida Group, Lodestone Energy, Les Mills NZ Ltd and EROAD. Previous directorships include Abano Healthcare, SkyTV, Goodman Property Trust, the Electricity Authority, Ports of Auckland Ltd, Transpower NZ Ltd, Auckland Regional Holdings, Tower Health and Life, Housing NZ and America’s Cup Village Ltd.

Susan has a keen interest in sport, education and the environment, was chair of the Avantidrome, past chair of Auckland Hockey and the NZ Eco-Labelling Trust and a past board member of St. Cuthbert’s College, EECA and commissioner of TEC. Susan was a member of the working group reviewing Swimming NZ, is a Chartered Fellow of the IoD and has been on the Auckland Branch Committee since 2010. Susan was made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to corporate governance.
