Overview

We are delighted to announce that due to positive feedback received following our Dunedin event, we have secured John Farrow and James Cowan to repeat this valuable presentation in–person for our Central Otago members and guests.

The new Protected Disclosures (Protection of Whistleblowers) Act came into force on 1 July 2022. The new Act replaces the Protected Disclosures Act 2000 and modernises the law on whistleblowing in New Zealand. In this Director Dialogue John and James will cover: 

  • The requirements of the new Act including what to do when receiving a protected disclosure.
  • The key changes from the repealed statute.
  • The relationship between protected disclosures and employment law.
  • Case law on protected disclosures.
  • Practical guidance on 'Speak Up' policies and procedures in the workplace.

John and James will also discuss the roles and responsibilities that employees, employers and their bargaining sides will have now the Fair Pay Agreements Act has passed and applications to initiate bargaining can be made from 1 December 2022.

Speakers

John Farrow

John is a Partner co-leading Anderson Lloyd's national employment team.  He specialises in employment and health & safety law.  John's expertise covers the full range of employment matters, including those which involve criminal and civil aspects. 

John has represented employees, senior executives, small to medium businesses, councils, local authorities and corporates.  John is a LEADR qualified mediator, member of the Institute of Directors and is an ‘Association of Workplace Investigators’ Certificate holder.

John is named in the 'Best Lawyers in New Zealand' publication, Labour and Employment Law category, and as a 'next generation partner' in the Legal 500. 

James Cowan

James is an Associate in Anderson Lloyd’s Employment and Litigation team. He specialises in employment law as well as health &  safety and general civil litigation.

Prior to joining Anderson Lloyd James spent six years working in Auckland, first for a large commercial law firm and then in a forensic and employee investigations role in the professional services industry.

James has particular specialist expertise in workplace investigations involving fraud, conflicts of interest, bullying, corruption, or other serious misconduct across all industries. He has conducted and advised on dozens of workplace investigations. James also regularly advises on privacy, information disclosure, and whistleblowing laws.
