Following the Climate Governance Workshop, join us for a tour of Watercare’s Māngere plant.
Following the Climate Governance Workshop, join us for a one-hour tour of the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant to witness firsthand the impressive infrastructure and sustainable practices that are being applied in the real world. This tour is optional and complimentary. It requires a separate registration.
The tour offers a unique opportunity to explore how a key infrastructure asset contributes to climate goals, sustainability, and the circular economy. It's a valuable experience for directors looking to understand practical climate action within an operational context.
The Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant treats and disposes of wastewater from about three-quarters of Auckland’s population, treating an average of 345 million litres of wastewater per day. Sustainability is an important part of the plant’s operation – it has a cogeneration engine which generates electricity from biogas and provides about 55 per cent of the plant’s energy. It is also home to two New Zealand-first trials – one using homegrown anammox bugs in the wastewater treatment process at the innovation centre, and the other using a portable greenhouse gas monitor to measure nitrous oxide on the activated sludge reactors– and a resource recovery process, where we harvest a fertiliser called struvite from the phosphorus and nitrogen that crystalises during the wastewater treatment plant.
Join us to see the future of wastewater management and energy sustainability at Watercare.

The Institute of Directors New Zealand (IoD) launched Chapter Zero New Zealand in March 2022. It is the home for climate change governance at the IoD and aims to support directors to meet their fiduciary duties by supporting them with the skills, tools, processes and information they need to act and guide their companies through the challenges of climate change.
