Join us for this discussion with RBNZ Deputy Governor Christian Hawkesby
Following on from the publication of the joint Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) – Te Pūtea Matua and Financial Markets Authority (FMA) – Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko Governance Thematic Review report on 5 September, RBNZ Deputy Governor Christian Hawkesby discusses the path towards good governance in the financial system of Aotearoa.
As the prudential regulator of deposit takers and insurers, RBNZ is very aware of the crucial role that good governance has on the stability of those institutions and the financial system, as well as the ability of the financial services industry to meet the needs of New Zealanders. The results of the Thematic Review will inform RBNZ’s institutional supervision priorities, and input into our supervisory rules, guidelines and practices as we embed the new Deposit Takers Act.
RBNZ has recently undergone its own significant governance changes with the establishment of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act 2021 and its new governance board.
Christian has been with Te Putea Matua since 2019. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Governor/General Manager Financial Stability Group, Christian was the Assistant Governor and General Manager of Economics, Financial Markets and Banking.
Christian was also part of the team that established Harbour Asset Management, which was awarded Morningstar New Zealand Fund Manager of the Year in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
Before this, Christian spent 9 years at the Bank of England, where he held senior positions including Private Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Chief Manager of Sterling Markets and Head of Market Intelligence.
Christian graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Master of Commerce (Hons) majoring in Economics.
