Overview

Both of the boards Denise chairs have recently completed work on ‘innovation and learning’ from a governance perspective. Denise will share her experiences of this work and stories of her governance journey.

Denise Church

Director - Leadership Matters Limited

Denise Church is a Wellington-based company director and consultant and is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors. Her particular interests are in strategy, change management and leadership, and how organisations can navigate disruptive times. 

Denise currently chairs the boards of ESR (the Institute of Environmental and Scientific Research) and Airways NZ and is on the boards of Predator Free Wellington and the Scout Youth Foundation. She chaired the board of Zealandia (the Karori Sanctuary Trust) until 2018. She has held a number of other governance roles in the tourism, research, education, youth development, environment and health sectors. 

Denise was Chief Executive at Ministry for the Environment from 1996 to 2001. Denise’s consulting work focuses on leadership, strategy and governance, and she helps senior executives, leadership teams and boards be focused and effective.

In her spare time, Denise is a front line scout leader, tramps and skis, and enjoys music. In 2019/20 she was President of the Rotary Club of Wellington. Denise is married to Michael and they have an adult daughter.
