Overview

In this panel discussion, panellists Brent Impey, Justine Smyth, Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan and Ziena Jalil will share their thoughts on the benefits of all forms of diversity at the board table and the implementation of diversity policies.

Brent Impey

Brent is chair of the New Zealand Rugby Union, is director and chair of the Remuneration Committees of Yellow Pages Group and Devon Funds Management Limited, and director of Strategy at Ports of Auckland. He is also a media consultant and a professional mentor.

Previous board, consultancy and chief executive positions include: chair of The Radio Bureau, Television Broadcasters Council and Fred Hollows Foundation; director of Hutchwilco NZ, Freeview, Pumpkin Patch and Radio Broadcasters Association; on the management board of CanWest Global (operators of the FM Group); management consultant to Market Pulse International and the New Zealand Rugby Union; and media and business consultant to Gerson Lehrman Group. For eleven years he was CEO of MediaWorks NZ, and drive host on Radio Live (2010-2011). He was CE of Independent Broadcasting Group (1989-1992) and a partner at McElroy Milne Barristers & Solicitors (1984-1989) specialising in media law. Brent is a Member of the IoD and joined the Auckland Branch Committee in 2013.

Justine Smyth

Justine is the chair of Spark NZ, the chair of The Breast Cancer Foundation NZ and a director of Auckland International Airport.  She is also co-chair of the Champions for Change.

Justine has experience in governance, mergers and acquisitions, taxation and financial performance of large corporate enterprises from being the Group Finance Director at Lion Nathan and a Partner at Deloitte.  She also spent 10 years owning and running her own businesses.

She is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants NZ and a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors. In 2020 Justine was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Governance and Women.

Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan

Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan is the Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities, Minister for Youth, and Associate Minister for Social Development and Employment. She is the first person of Indian origin to become a Minister in New Zealand and was appointed in November 2020.

Born in India, she went to school in Singapore, and then moved to New Zealand to further her education. She has spent her work life advocating on behalf of people whose voices are often unheard – survivors of domestic violence, and migrant workers who have been exploited. She strongly believes that everyone has the right to live with dignity - that means equitable access to affordable housing, quality education and decent, secure work.

Ziena Jalil

Ziena doesn’t believe in boxes and is hard to put into one. She consults on strategy and stakeholder engagement, and is a board member of Manukau Institute of Technology, Unitec, DNA Design, and the Cancer Society Auckland Northland.

A New Zealand Women of Influence awards finalist (Board & Management, and Global categories), Ziena was also recognised by Campaign Asia Pacific as part of its 2020 Women to Watch, a group of 40 outstanding women in the Asia Pacific.

She has received several international awards for her work promoting New Zealand trade and education in Asia, while in the roles of Regional Director (South & South East Asia) for Education New Zealand, New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Singapore, and Head of North Asia Marketing and Communications for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

Ziena has helped some of New Zealand’s largest businesses build their reputation and revenue, advised Ministers, and worked at the grassroots supporting the growth of Māori and Pacific young people in professional careers. She continues to mentor and coach several young leaders.
