Organisation description

Medbury School is an independent boys’ preparatory school in Christchurch, educating boys from Years 1–8. Our vision, “Growing boys to learn, lead and succeed”, reflects our commitment to developing each boy’s academic potential, character and confidence within a caring and purposeful learning community.

Our four core values, Excellence, Integrity, Respect and Empathy, guide how we learn, build relationships and contribute to the lives of others. Through a broad education encompassing academic learning, sport, the arts, innovation, leadership and service, we encourage boys to discover their strengths, embrace challenges and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Guided by the Medbury Compass Towards 2030, we combine strong educational foundations with thoughtful innovation and close partnerships with families. Our Graduate Profile expresses our ambition for every boy to leave Medbury curious and capable, grounded in character and ready to contribute. Our motto, “Play the Game”, captures the spirit of fairness, effort and responsibility that underpins school life.

Particular skills/competencies sought

We are looking for an accomplished director with significant governance experience, preferably including experience chairing a board or committee.

You will bring strong strategic, commercial and financial acumen, excellent judgement, and the ability to facilitate robust discussion and build consensus. You will have a collaborative leadership style, combined with the confidence to challenge constructively, and the credibility and presence to lead conversations when matters are complex or contested.

Importantly, you will have a genuine commitment to the education and development of boys and to stewarding Medbury's purpose for future generations.

Previous experience within education would be valuable but is not essential. The successful candidate will understand the importance of intergenerational stewardship and will be comfortable engaging with the wider Medbury community, including alumni, supporters and advancement activity.

Meetings are monthly and usually last 2 to 3 hours. Several subcommittees require the chair to be a member. The Trust Board Chair also serves as a full member of the Foundation Board; the Foundation Board meets bimonthly.

Initially, a three year term.

Geographical considerations

Trust Board meetings are held at the school, which is located in Ilam, Christchurch.
