Organisation description

MartinJenkins is one of New Zealand's leading public sector advisory firms, with more than 30 years of experience supporting governments, councils, and other organisations. With over 40 consultants, based in our Auckland and Wellington offices, we work at the intersection of economics, strategy, and public policy to help clients navigate complex challenges and make better decisions on the issues that shape Aotearoa. Our work spans infrastructure, regulation, local government, and social and economic policy, and we are trusted to provide rigorous, independent advice that clients can confidently act on.

We are a privately owned company, and we place a high value on the role of independent directors in helping us drive long term value. Our Board looks to its independent members for outside perspective, commercial challenge, and the judgement that comes from experience beyond our own walls.

Particular skills/competencies sought

This particular appointment is being made at a moment of change and significant positive opportunity. As our markets and our clients are reshaped by digital and AI-driven change, we are looking for a director who can help the Board think, and decide, differently. We are looking for a commercially astute innovator who has helped a business find new ways to create and deliver value, and who makes confident calls in conditions that will not sit still. Specifically, you will bring:

  • Innovation with a commercial edge. A track record of developing new business models, products, or ways of delivering, and turning them into real commercial results.
  • Sharp commercial judgement. The ability to weigh opportunity against risk and make decisions that hold up.
  • Experience in sectors undergoing change. Ideally across settings with differing risk profiles, from steadier regulated environments to faster-moving, higher-stakes markets.
  • Dynamic decision-making. Comfort acting under uncertainty, adjusting as conditions shift, and judging when to move and when to wait.
  • Digital and AI fluency. Including a practical view on digital delivery and direct, technology-enabled ways of reaching and serving clients.

We welcome applications from individuals early in their governance journey (one or two previous board roles) who bring genuine commercial and innovation insight.

MartinJenkins is committed to a diverse Board and warmly encourages expressions of interest from candidates of all backgrounds.
