In this course George Adams, a highly experienced director who chaired the independent forestry safety review in 2014, and Mike Cosman, an experienced health and safety consultant, discuss how to apply the legislation in real life scenarios.

    George is an independent company director and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is a former CEO of Coca-Cola Amatil New Zealand, finance director of British Telecom Northern Ireland and Group Finance Director of Molino Beverages Group. He is also Chair of both the Occupational Health Advisory Group, an expert panel that advises WorkSafe on Occupational Health strategy and the Business Leaders Health and Safety Forum.

    George is passionate about improving New Zealand’s health and safety record and in 2014 he chaired the Independent Forestry Safety Review which delivered a report on practical recommendations to improve the industry’s safety record. At the 2013 Safeguard Workplace Health and Safety Awards George was awarded the “New Zealand Leader of the Year Award”, and his work at Coca-Cola Amatil was a noted case study in the IoD’s 2013 publication Good Governance Practices Guideline for Managing Health and Safety Risks.

    Mike is a highly experienced and respected health and safety professional with international experience as a regulator, policy maker, manager and consultant. He was the only specialist member of the Independent Taskforce on Workplace Health and Safety established by the Minister of Labour after the Pike River tragedy and of the Independent Forestry Safety Review. Mike has deep technical expertise in many areas of health and safety as well as the ability to apply this in a strategic context whether at firm, sector or national level. He regularly undertakes expert witness work for both prosecution and defence and peer review complex investigations. Mike has facilitated the IoD’s Advanced Health and Safety Governance Workshop for the past three years. Mike is also the independent member on the Health and Safety Governance Committees for Corrections, Customs and Oranga Tamariki.
