Join us to hear Ngati Kahungunu Chair Bayden Barber discuss what’s next for the Iwi, and understand how he sees good governance playing a part in that future.
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is a mandated iwi organisation with the authority to represent the people of Ngāti Kahungunu and is the governing body for all aspects of Iwi development.
It is the third largest Iwi in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Join us to hear Ngati Kahungunu Chair Bayden Barber discuss what’s next for the Iwi, and understand how he sees good governance playing a part in that future.
Bayden Barber is the Chairman of the Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board and was elected with the highest votes at the 2022 triennial election. He resides in Waimārama where he is heavily involved with his community and Waimarama marae.
Bayden served for two terms on the Hastings District Council. He is passionate about the iwi and wants Ngāti Kahungunu to take its rightful place at the top table of Te Ao Māori.
Bayden is also keen to work collectively with Ngāti Kahungunu hapū claimant groups to give them the financial strength to match other successful iwi.
“The iwi chair is such an important role for our people and requires the skill and ability to go from the marae to the board table, making important decisions on the future for our people.”
Building leadership within the iwi is something Bayden feels strongly about. This means investing in people to ensure they have competence and experience in decision-making roles.
Bayden also sits on other Boards and is also a Kahungunu Asset Holding Company Director. He says that building solid relationships is a key component to such an important role.
Bayden is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors.
