At this First Break event, our panel will share candid insights into how governance portfolios are genuinely built in New Zealand, including the realities, setbacks, opportunities, and lessons that shaped their own journeys.
Designed for early-stage directors or experienced executives looking to transition into governance, this session aims to provide practical insights, honest reflections, and differing perspectives on the evolving pathways into governance.
Following the panel discussion, attendees will have the opportunity to continue conversations over networking drinks and canapés with panelists, senior directors, and Wellington Branch Committee members.

Jackie Lloyd is the immediate past president of the Institute of Directors.
A life-long interest in the relationship between human behaviour and business performance led Jackie through an executive career as the global human resources director for the New Zealand Dairy Board and NZMP Fonterra, to consulting and governance.
She is currently chair of Naylor Love Enterprises Ltd and director of CentrePort Ltd and The Tatua Co-operative Dairy Company Ltd. Jackie is also Deputy Chair of the Lion Foundation.
Jackie’s previous governance roles include AgResearch, Kiwi Group Holdings, NZ Post, New Zealand Cricket and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
MInstD
Tomina is a director with governance experience across health, social impact, professional services and community organisations. She serves on the Boards of Arohanui Hospice and ECPAT Child Alert, as well as their Audit and Risk Committees, and chairs The Backbone Collective. Her advisory board experience includes McHugh & Shaw and Tika, and she is a member of the Institute of Directors Manawatū Branch Committee.
Tomina is completing a PhD examining how parenthood is experienced, recognised and responded to within the Royal New Zealand Air Force, drawing on kaupapa Māori to explore the relationship between people and institutional systems, culture and practice. As a māmā of three and a military veteran with 19 years’ service in the RNZAF, she brings together lived experience with questions about how institutions respond to significant change in people’s lives.
Tomina’s pathway into governance has not followed a conventional route. She is interested in how people can recognise and translate the value of their professional and lived experience into meaningful contribution around the board table.
MInstD
Brad Olsen is Principal Economist at Infometrics and is one of NewZealand’s leading economic commentators. He is also a board member of Business Central, and member of the Institute of Directors, Global Shapers Community Wellington Hub, the Asia New Zealand Foundation Leadership Network, the Wellington District Licensing Committee, volunteers with Take10, is a marriage and civil union celebrant, and was formerly a member of the Wellington City Youth Council.
Brad is also a community leader and is one of New Zealand’s youngest Justices of the Peace.
His work in the community has been recognised a number of times: he was named New Zealand’s Queen’s Young Leader in 2016, one of Asia New Zealand Foundation’s 25 to Watch in 2019, and Young Wellingtonian of the Year 2020.
As a young person, Brad brings a different perspective to key opportunities and challenges that New Zealand faces and is keen to unlock more potential across businesses and communities.Emerging trends continue to accelerate the pace of change across the world and in New Zealand,and Brad focuses on understanding these trends as they evolve and highlighting way to enhance outcomes for local communities.
He regularly presents to boards, senior leadership, stakeholders, and key decision makers across New Zealand about key economic trends. Brad is a skilled communicator and leader, and works to inform key decision makers and the wider public about emerging and changing trends and getting useful and understandable insights to a wide range of groups.
Michelle oversees end-to-end director search and recruitment, Director Vacancies, Director CV reviews and facilitated workshops. With more than 20 years’ experience in executive search and talent acquisition, she brings deep expertise in board recruitment across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. Michelle has partnered with NZX-listed companies, Crown entities, local government, and community organisations to deliver strategic appointments that strengthen governance capability and diversity.
Known for her discretion, strategic insight, and commercial acumen, she has supported major national initiatives including Three Waters Reform, the National Transition Unit within the Department of Internal Affairs, the Department of Corrections’ electronic monitoring programme, and Waka Kotahi’s organisational transformation. Clients value Michelle’s collaborative, relationship-led approach and her ability to cut through the noise to identify exceptional talent. She has an innate instinct for recognising the “gold” often identifying candidates who may appear left field, but whose capability, perspective, and values align precisely with a board’s strategic direction, resulting in appointments that deliver meaningful and lasting governance impact.
