A local review of the new Health & Safety Governance Guide recently published by the IoD and WorkSafe, along with a discussion on practical focus areas for directors.
A strong framework of governance is crucial for achieving successful business results, which are closely linked to overall well-being and performance. Governance allows for the establishment of a vision and values that promote a comprehensive approach, encompassing safety, efficiency, ethics, and profitability as interconnected components of high-quality work.
The topic of health and safety holds significant importance within the realm of governance. Take part in a discussion with Craig Marriott MInstD, lead author and expert advisor of the recently published Health and Safety Governance: A Good Practice Guide, and committee member Guy Roper MInstD as they delve into and explore its implications for directors.

Craig is an independent consultant providing governance, strategy and leadership advice in safety and risk management. He is the author of the new IoD/WorkSafe Health and Safety Governance Good Practice Guideline and facilitates H&S governance training for the IoD.
He brings over 30 years’ experience managing safety in high-hazard industries. From nuclear submarines and highly radioactive waste, to high-pressure gas pipelines and oil rigs, Craig has written safety cases and managed safety for some of the world’s most hazardous operations.
As a strong advocate of challenging conventional safety thinking and author of the book Challenging the Safety Quo, Craig is known for bringing a pragmatic approach to translate health and safety management theory into workable solutions.
Around the Board table, he considers strong governance to be the foundation for successful business outcomes, which are inseparable from good health and safety outcomes. Governance provides the opportunity to set the vision and culture for a holistic approach that views safe, efficient, ethical and profitable outcomes as related properties of work done well.

He currently holds two board roles – at Fisher Funds Management Limited where he is Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and at Port Nelson Limited where he is Chair of the Health and Safety Governance subcommittee of the board.
The work in the port sector presented a variety of operating and cultural challenges in the area of health and safety, which has fuelled Guy’s interest in ensuring we lift standards of governance across the country.
