Exciting times, but how do we extract the maximum benefit from all the big projects lined up for the Marlborough region?
In conjunction with the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce this is an excellent opportunity to hear Marlborough District Council Chief Executive Officer Mark Wheeler, talk about how the District Council is planning and what Council will need to do to respond to the extra pressure and growing pains being placed on its planning and services with the predicted growth in all areas.
Mark is CEO of Marlborough District Council. Mark joined Marlborough District Council in 1998 as Assets and Services Manager, after working in private sector roles including as General Manager, Alliance Foods. He was appointed Deputy Chief Executive in 2005 and Chief Executive in 2016. Mark is responsible for 300 staff and $729 million capital expenditure over the next ten years. Annual operating expenditure is over $130 million.
He has overseen many major capital projects, including new community and sports facilities, water supply and sewerage treatment upgrades and several large subdivisions. He also led the Council through the Kaikōura earthquake and Covid-19 responses and recoveries. An early responsibility was the formation of Marlborough Roads in 2000.
His current priorities include the new Interislander ferries project in Picton, the new library and art gallery construction and leading the staff response to major Government reform proposals, including the ‘3 Waters’, Resource Management Act and future of local government reviews.
Mark has a Bachelor of Commerce from Canterbury University and moved from early work as a reluctant accountant into general management. He is an avid cricket and rugby fan and tries to keep fit on his mountain bike, a pursuit he loves.
We have been monitoring government updates regarding COVID-19 and are keeping up to date with Ministry of Health guidance with regard to events and public gatherings.
