Overview

Environmental risks and sustainable practices are a key focus for most boards and businesses.  Join us to discuss how as a director we can help the organisations we represent to invest in environmental stewardship and ensure they are a good ancestor for future generations.

Experienced director and environmental advisor, Devon McLean QSM will share his personal insights on his own journey, plus a few confessions along the way. He will touch on how to assess the risk, focus and action projects, and how to empower your team in these unprecedented times where change is needed.

Devon McLean

Devon received his professional training in forestry at Canterbury University and a Master’s degree in science from the University of California at Berkeley. During a 31 year career in the New Zealand forest industry, he was responsible for a range of planning and management roles including ten years as Chief Operating Officer at Carter Holt Harvey (CHH). Associated roles included Chairing the New Zealand Forest Industries Council for five years and seven years as a Director of the NZ Forest Research Institute now Scion.

Devon was involved in the formation of Project Crimson and served as a trustee for 26 years.

In 2005 he retired from CHH to pursue other interests and became involved in the privately funded ecological restoration of Rotoroa Island in the Hauraki Gulf. This led to a number of his current roles including Environmental Advisor to the philanthropic NEXT Foundation, Director of Project Janszoon the privately funded ecological restoration of the Abel Tasman National Park, Chairman of Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP), and governance roles with Taranaki Mounga Project Ltd, Predator Free Wellington Ltd, Te Manahuna Aoraki Ltd, and Predator Free South Westland Ltd and PF2050 Ltd.

Along the way, he completed a three-year term on the New Zealand Conservation Authority and six years on the Governance Group of the Biological Heritage National Science Challenge.

Devon was awarded a QSM for services to the environment in the 2015 New Year Honours list.
