Learnings from infrastructure asset management
What learnings does infrastructure asset management have relevant for directors? If we think of one aspect of governance as managing the portfolio of assets, in terms of maintenance and capital investment. There is relevance therefore in the alignment of those assets to the entity’s purpose and strategy – both current and into the future including coping with the uncertainty of the policy environment. Secondly, how does one manage the risk to those assets and therefore effective oversight of that risk. The learnings will come as two levels also, firstly considerations in directly managing an entity’s assets. But secondly, at a higher level, there are approaches and ways of thinking that are applicable in a more wider sense, again both around purpose and strategy and risk. I will try to bring this to life with some real world examples.
This forum provides a great opportunity to connect with other directors and have a round table discussion on topics of interest.
Mike Tapper is a civil engineer by trade and senior principal and practice lead for Beca’s transportation infrastructure asset management offering. Beca currently supports with professional services four NZTA State Highway network management contracts including Hawkes Bay and East Waikato which have both suffered under recent cyclone damage. We hold three SH structures management contracts for Northland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato. Beca undertake the forward work programming for the Auckland Transport road network and half their structures assets. Mike has served as project director for many of these projects and has 30 years experience in this space. He has co-authored four NZTA research papers, held national industry roles and authored and starred in a digital badge for traffic counting.
