Organisation description

This is an opportunity to help shape the next chapter of governance for one of New Zealand’s leading specialist eye care providers.

Eye Institute is seeking an experienced and highly capable Independent Chair to lead its Board through the next stage of its governance journey.

Eye Institute brings together highly skilled ophthalmologists and healthcare professionals who share a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care. With expertise spanning laser vision correction, cataract surgery and a comprehensive range of specialist eye treatments, they have built a strong reputation in specialist eye care.

As an Independent Chair, you will have an opportunity to influence how they are governed, bringing greater structure, independent perspective and strategic oversight while respecting the clinical expertise and professional autonomy that underpin its success.

Particular skills/competencies sought

The opportunity

First and foremost, we are looking for an accomplished Chair with strong governance credentials, sound commercial judgement and the confidence to lead a Board of highly experienced professionals.

You will understand that effective governance is about more than structure and process. It is about bringing people together, navigating different perspectives, building trust and creating an environment where constructive debate leads to sound decisions.

Experience within the healthcare sector would be advantageous, particularly an understanding of the dynamics of specialist medical practices, where highly skilled clinicians work collaboratively while bringing their own professional perspectives and priorities.

Working alongside the Board, you will help strengthen governance frameworks, clarify accountabilities and support strategic decision-making, ensuring they are well positioned for the future.

About you

You will bring:

  • Proven Chair experience, with a strong track record of effective board leadership and contemporary governance practice.
  • The judgement, credibility and interpersonal skills to bring together experienced professionals, encourage constructive discussion and build consensus.
  • Strong commercial acumen and financial literacy, with the ability to provide meaningful oversight of financial performance, risk and long-term sustainability.
  • Experience strengthening governance structures, processes and board effectiveness.
  • Ideally, an understanding of the healthcare sector and the dynamics of clinician-led or specialist professional services organisations.

While healthcare experience would be valued, the Board is open to the broader skills and perspectives an accomplished Chair could bring. Above all, it is seeking someone who can lead with independence, integrity and a collaborative approach.

Commitment required

The Board meets approximately six times per year, with meetings generally held face-to-face in Auckland.
