Overview

Artificial Intelligence is the topic de jour. With the advent of ChatGPT, and other generative AI technologies, it can be challenging making sense of it all.

From a governance perspective, AI has tremendous potential to assist across many different domains. In the health & safety space, AI is already playing a crucial role in monitoring critical risk controls, employee behaviour and providing opportunities for hazard identification, work design improvements, worker education, and real-time assurance relating to critical risks. Virtual Reality (VR) supports training through simulating dangerous scenarios, allowing employees to practice procedures without putting them in harm's way.

However, with any new technologies, there are potential unintended consequences. Our panel will discuss these including the continued importance of identifying critical risks and controls, verifying your controls, successful implementation of any emerging technologies, and considering employee wellbeing, in addition to privacy and data security.

Ultimately, humans are essential to the success of any health and safety approach. Our panel will cover the importance of integrating human oversight and expertise with these technologies, and how to develop effective training programs to maximize their potential.

An opportunity to unlock the potential of emerging technologies for improved workplace health and safety while considering critical risks, unintended consequences, and the importance of human expertise.  The latest artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and other technologies will be demonstrated.

Bede Cammock-Elliott

Founder, seeo.ai

Bede founded seedigital, a remote video monitoring & security integrator in 2003. seedigital protects $5.5 billion worth of assets every night for many of New Zealand’s most cherished brands, with sites literally from Kaitaia to Bluff .

In 2019, one of seedigital’s clients suffered  an avoidable, tragic  workplace fatality. In subsequent conversations with the CEO, he asked – how did I not know this was going on? How would I know and then what technologies exist so I will know. This led to the creation of seeo – which is the latin word To Know.

seeo ingests CCTV footage, and using a suite of AI-technologies, analyses it for undesirable H&S behaviours, process compliance and sub-optimal work design. seeo shows work as done, versus imagined.

Bede is Founder of the LSV Patrons Foundation which supports Course Patrons of Limited Services Volunteer programme run by the NZ Military for long term unemployed young people.

Darcy Hart

Darcy joined the Nexus team in December 2020 as GM of Sales & Marketing, and was later appointed CEO of Nexus and Conlinxx. He has more than 25 years’ experience in transport and logistics and has worked in various senior and executive roles within the industry, including roles within Tapper Transport and Coda Group; he was GM Business Development, GM NZ Operations and Interim CEO at the latter. He was a Director of Metrobox from 2019-2020.

Darcy thrives on customer engagement, ensuring that the waste within the supply chain is eliminated by creating new solutions and thinking outside the normal logistics model. Outside of the logistics industry, he is a senior station officer at the Pukekohe Fire Station.

Francois Barton

Executive Director, Business Leaders' Health & Safety Forum

Francois is the Executive Director of the New Zealand Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum – a coalition of more than 390 CEOs committed to building cultures that enable people and business to thrive.

Before joining the Forum in May 2015, Francois worked in the health and safety regulator for almost 10 years, through the Pike River Mine tragedy, major health and safety ecosystem reforms and was directly involved in establishing WorkSafe NZ.  During that time, he established WorkSafe’s national programme team, including the significant interventions in construction, forestry, work-related health and agriculture.

Francois has spent his career working to effect change by connecting diverse groups and perspectives, reframing and redefining complex challenges and remaining anchored to the core belief that it is only by working together we will make progress.
