Overview

Four years ago New Plymouth Airport embarked on an ambitious project to construct a brand new terminal, transforming the 1960s airport when annual passengers numbered 50,000, into a modern regional gateway for almost half a million passengers a year.

A major component of the project was the extensive involvement of Puketapu Hapu in the design process that is not only seen throughout with the internal cultural artwork, but also in the structural form of the building.

The airport’s $29 million new terminal opened on 17 March but closed shortly after, when on 4 April Air New Zealand stopped flights nationwide as part of the COVID-19 level 4 lockdown.

The economic impact of Covid-19 has struck regional airports across New Zealand. So where to now?

Networking will take place over drinks and nibbles before Airport Director and chair Philip Cory-Wright and Chief Executive Wayne Wootton provide a rundown of the redevelopment project, the turbulence they’ve experienced since opening and future plans.

The evening will conclude with a short behind-the-scenes tour of the new terminal.
