Overview

Never has there been a better time in history for women to come together as we learn to live, work and respond in our new world order. Take Your Space is an essential resource drawn from 16 diverse and successful women who want to help you to take one step forward; a step towards success.

In this Women Directors’ Network event we will hear directly from the authors of the book, as well as get some candid insights from Leading Director MJ Daly on her experience taking that one step forward in her executive and governance career.

The price of attending this event also includes a copy of the book which will be sent to attendees. All the proceeds from the book sales go to The Aunties – an organisation who work with women healing from intimate partner/sexual violence.

This event is part of our new Women Directors’ Network (WDN) programme. Our goal is to build a series of relevant events and networking opportunities to enable female directors to meet, share their experiences and gain access to events and activities that will help build governance pathways.

If you are keen to stay in touch sign up here to receive updates about upcoming WDN networking opportunities. The WDN is an IoD member-only benefit.

Panellists

Jo Cribb

Jo has had a long career working on some of the toughest issues facing New Zealand – child poverty, violence against women and entrenched unemployment. She has been a senior public servant, leading the Office of the Children’s Commission, and most recently as Chief Executive of the Ministry for Women.

She is an experienced NGO governor with roles including Royal New Zealand Navy, IHC, VSA, Literacy Aotearoa and was Chair of Scots College. Jo recently published research into the governance capability of social sector NGOs. Her current portfolio includes working with leaders in New Zealand and internationally to achieve their diversity goals.

Jo believes good governance is the anchor for our organisations across all sectors. Good governance is the work of a diverse team of directors working to add value to the organisation's kaupapa, and so adding value to communities.

Jo has perfected distilling her own gin and is completing her advanced qualifications in wine. When not studying obscure Greek grape varieties, she can be found with her nose in a historical novel or trying her hand at adventure races.

MJ Daly

Mary-Jane (“MJ”) is Chair of AIG Insurance New Zealand Limited, Chair of the Fonterra Shareholders Fund, an Independent Director of Kiwi Property Group Limited and Kiwibank Limited. She is also a member of the MBIE Risk and Advisory Committee. She has served on the boards of Auckland Transport, Toka Tu Ake EQC, Cigna Life Insurance, Airways Corporation of New Zealand and the New Zealand Green Building Council.

In her executive career MJ worked mainly in banking and insurance in a variety of roles both in New Zealand and the UK. Her last executive role was as Executive General Manager at State Insurance. Prior to this appointment she was Chief Financial Officer for IAG in NZ.

When not In Auckland, MJ enjoys spending time in Wanaka and making the most of all the outdoor activities on her doorstep there.

Rachel Petero

With strong Māori genealogy to her tribal lands and people of Waikato-Tainui, Rachel advocates and drives gender equity, diversity and inclusivity through her leadership roles in governance, business and community development.

Rachel’s management consulting business grew exponentially from 2010 from London to Doha, and returning home to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2015. She continues to receive recognition and awards as the Founder of Rise2025, women leading change in Qatar and her internationally recognised leadership, business and coaching programmes.

Internationally trained in human resources, executive and business coaching, her vision for Rise2025 Global is to transform the lives of 100,000 indigenous women and their families by 2025.

Against all odds, in May 2020, Rachel secured a new global partnership with Shopify Canada to launch ‘HIWA’, an e-coaching, e-commerce programme for Indigenous women.

And in October 2020, she launched her first co-authored published book titled ‘Take Your Space’ sharing the secrets of 14 successful and diverse women.

Through her corporate business development and governance experience as Co-Chair of Te Ohu Whai Ao Trust and trustee on Ngāti Tamaoho boards, Rachel continues to remain locally grounded and globally focused. With partnerships in the UK, Middle East, Pacific Islands, Chile, Canada and North America, she also holds cultural advisory roles for Sysdoc NZ (since 2018) and Otara Bluelight Committee (since 2016).

Rachel has stepped into the Vice Chair role of UNICEF Aotearoa New Zealand in May 2022 and an international director role with IP CFT Los Lagos in Chile in January 2022, ensuring Rachel brings a truly global focus with a unique indigenous lens. Her ministerial governance role with Pacific Cooperation Foundation ended in January 2022.

Alongside her husband John (Niuean, Cook Island, Tongan), they are investing and expanding their for purpose business Rise2025 to pass onto their six nieces and nephews.
