Hear from Rakihia Tau as he shares his Māori governance journey, inspirations and perspectives on leadership.
Strong governance is shaped by lived experience, culture and values. In this special event, we welcome Rakihia Tau (Ngāi Tahu), Associate Commissioner for the Commerce Commission, and chair of Te Tauraki Ltd and the Crown Forest Rental Trust.
Rakihia’s governance and executive career spans the private, public and Māori sectors, with a focus on strategy, relationships and investments. He has also held senior roles within Ngāi Tahu, including Group Head Strategy and Relationships, Investments Manager, and Commercial Manager.
Rakihia will reflect on his personal journey into governance, the inspirations and challenges along the way, and the role of values, tikanga and iwi aspirations in effective governance. He will also share his thoughts on the future of governance in Aotearoa.
This is a unique opportunity to hear from a respected leader and gain insights to inspire your own governance journey.
This evening is also an opportunity to acknowledge the recipient of the Institute of Directors Canterbury Aspiring Māori Director Award, in recognition of emerging Māori leadership and its vital role in shaping the future of governance in Aotearoa.
Rakihia Tau (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kuia) has held a wide range of governance and executive roles across the private, public and Māori sectors. He began his career as a marine engineer before completing a B.Com and Masters, and went on to work in investments, property, tourism, and mergers and acquisitions.
Within Ngāi Tahu, Rakihia has held senior positions including Group Head Strategy, Relationships and Investments, and Commercial Manager, before becoming General Manager for Strategy and Influence. He is currently chair of the Crown Forest Rental Trust, director of his consultancy Ihia Ltd, and serves with the NZ Commerce Commission.
Drawing on this diverse experience, Rakihia brings a pragmatic and values-driven approach to governance and strategy. Known for weaving humour into his leadership, he often reminds us that even the toughest negotiations at the board table can feel easier than those at home.
