An immersive workshop designed to equip directors with the vision, skills and competencies to stimulate and steer innovation and enable collaborative growth.
In today's rapidly evolving landscape, marked by swift technological progress and dynamic market changes, the necessity for directors to actively champion and enable innovation has never been more critical. With the success rate of product innovation hovering around 5%, it's clear that traditional approaches are no longer sufficient.
To address this pressing need, the Auckland branch of the Institute of Directors, in collaboration with IMS Projects, offers an immersive and impactful two-hour workshop. Designed by directors for directors, this workshop equips participants with the essential competencies to drive innovation from the boardroom and lead their organisations into the future.
At the heart of this workshop is the case study of a traditional New Zealand manufacturing business at a crossroads. Although the legacy physical product business remains profitable, declining margins signal a need for transformation. Should the business pivot to leverage the data generated by its products? This critical question will set the stage for exploring key themes crucial to guiding innovation from the boardroom: dynamic strategy, leadership of innovation, managing innovation risk, and inspiring entrepreneurial management.
Participants will:
Empower yourself to lead your organisation through the challenges of today and into the opportunities of tomorrow. Numbers are limited.

Peter is an enthusiastic advocate and practitioner for technology commercialisation. He graduated from the University of Auckland in 1975 with a PhD in engineering. This qualification quickly led to a career in technology commercialisation.
His involvement with technology commercialisation began in the US and led to several decades of leading the commercialisation of R&D within large US multinational corporations. More recently, Peter returned to New Zealand and for eight years enjoyed realising the full potential of academic research as CEO of UniServices, the University of Auckland's technology commercialisation company. UniServices received the top Vero Award in 2010 for business excellence among companies with revenues greater than $100M. Peter retired from UniServices in 2013 and was awarded the Thompson Medal for the value he added to research in New Zealand by The Royal Society that same year.
Peter is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional and currently holds several advisory roles, including as a member of the Government's Return on Science Investment Committee, a member of the Ministry of Business and Innovation’s College of Assessors, and Chair of New Zealand’s Defence Technology Agency as New Zealand's Chief Defence Technologist. He supports numerous deep tech start-ups as chair, board member and advisor.
At the University of Auckland’s Business School Peter enjoys combining academic rigour with his practical experience by teaching subjects related to innovation, entrepreneurism and commercialisation as Adjunct Professor. He is also an academic programme leader for Executive Education at the Business School.
This set of experiences and associated networks enables Peter to support organisations which seek to realise the full value of their ideas in practice.
