Overview

The European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act) will impact organisations beyond Europe’s borders.

As the EU moves forward in its efforts to regulate AI, it is crucial for New Zealand companies to understand how the new rules will impact their business.

In this webinar Dr Sam De Silva and Barbara Zapisetskaya will offer an analysis of the key components of the EU AI Act, discuss the state of play of European AI standardisation (which will support the implementation of the AI Act) and provide guidance for New Zealand companies.

Dr Sam de Silva

Dr Sam De Silva is a Partner and the Global Co-Head of the Commercial Practice Group of CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP (CMS), an international law firm present in more than 40 countries worldwide. Sam has been appointed as an expert on the BSI committee responsible for developing AI standards (BSI ART/001). Sam specialises in complex and strategic IT projects and regularly advises on a variety of legal and contractual issues arising from the procurement and supply of AI solutions and services and the related regulatory issues. At an international level Sam is the Law Society’s representative on the IT Law Committee of the Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) and was on the EU Commission’s Expert Group on Cloud Computing. Sam is named as a Global Leader in the Who’s Who of Information Technology 2024, Who’s Who of Data Privacy and Protection 2024 and the Who’s Who of Data Security 2024 as one of very few UK solicitors listed in all 3 categories. Sam was the Co-convenor of an ISO Working Group which developed a new transformational ISO Standard on the management of contract and legal risk (ISO 31022:2020), and he has won numerous international awards for his work on this. Sam is a Kiwi and now based in London.

Barbara Zapisetskaya

Barbara Zapisetskaya is a Senior Associate in the Technology & Media Team at CMS, with a focus on cloud computing, outsourcing, IT services and emerging technologies. She regularly advises UK and international clients on a wide range of outsourcing and technology-related matters in regulated and non-regulated sectors. Barbara has extensive experience in drafting and negotiating complex technology transactions, in particular, cloud migration, IT outsourcings and enterprise-wide IT procurement. Barbara has a particular interest in the regulation and governance of artificial intelligence and is a regular contributor on this topic. Four years in a row, Barbara co-authored a chapter on artificial intelligence in the UK published annually by Global Legal Insights. She has recently co-authored a chapter on AI governance for  “The Handbook of Board Governance” (ed. by Dr. Leblanc). Barbara has lived in New Zealand for 12 years and worked at Simpson Grierson and then ASB. She is now based in London.

Kirsten (KP) Patterson

KP is the Chief Executive of the Institute of Directors, a qualified lawyer and a Distinguished Fellow of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand. Her governance roles include:

  • Chair, Global Network of Directors Institutes (GNDI)
  •  Chair, Brian Picot Ethical Leadership advisory board
  •  Trustee, Voices of Hope
  •  Board member, XRAP Advisory Panel, External Reporting Board (XRB)
  •  Ambassador, Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust.

With extensive governance and leadership experience, she is actively involved in community initiatives.

A strong advocate of diversity, KP was also a founding member of Global Women’s ‘Champions for Change’, a group of senior executives and directors who commit to diversity in the workplace, and a founding member of WiSPA, an organisation promoting women in sport, and mentors a number of business leaders. KP was also previously Director of the NZ Rugby Foundation.
