Fair workplaces: what can you do?
Incidents of worker exploitation are increasing the demand for ethical and sustainable work practices in New Zealand and abroad. Unethical and unsustainable practices can hurt the organisations you direct and your own reputation as a director. You can also be held personally liable for breaches of employment standards under the Employment Relations Act 2000.
This introductory webinar will build your understanding of employment law, the reality of worker exploitation and modern slavery here in NZ, and the steps you can take as a director to assure yourself that the organisations you oversee have ethical and sustainable work practices including across their supply chains.
Katherine is the head of Employment New Zealand, MBIE’s employment regulator, since August 2020. MBIE’s employment services support fair workplaces, through the protection of worker’s rights and providing support to employers and employees to develop and maintain productive employment relationships. Our regulatory services include the Labour Inspectorate, Employment Mediation Services, and administration of the Employment Relations Authority.
Prior to this, Katherine has worked in the New Zealand and UK public services over two decades, holding a series of leadership roles in operational delivery, corporate services and policy, across the economic development, labour market, immigration, energy and climate change portfolios.
Tania currently leads the Employer Systems and Assurance team in Employment NZ. The team sits alongside the Labour Inspectorate and Employment Mediators. They have a focus on influencing and enabling government and business leaders to systematically take greater ownership for how workers are treated across their organisations and the organisations they engage with eg. as employers, procurers, franchisors, recruiters, directors, investors.
Tania’s interest in fair workplaces was ignited when she joined the Labour Inspectorate in 2015 to lead the regulatory response to the wide-spread Holidays Act non-compliance issue. Before that her career had been in the business advisory space as both an employee in, and a consultant to, a range of Public and wider State Sector entities.
