Recognition of Prior Learning

The Chartered Member Assessment is a key criterion for entry to the category of Chartered Member. 

In order to sit the assessment candidates must have completed the IoD Company Directors' Course (CDC) or equivalent. Candidates are assessed on their knowledge and understanding of The Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice, and the content of the CDC.

Some IoD members have been practising directors for some length of time and have not completed the CDC. In this case the option to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in place of the CDC is available.

Process and criteria requirements when applying for Recognition of Prior Learning

  1. The candidate must have at least five (5) years elapsed time on two or more boards of directors, one (1) of which must meet two (2) of the following (3) criteria:
    • Assets >$5m
    • Turnover >$10m
    • Staff >15

    A board position must be held for 12 months or more on the qualifying board.

  2. The candidate must have completed, within the last five years, at least one (1) full day of IoD training (or equivalent) at post-Company Directors' Course level, eg Audit and Risk Committees, Board Dynamics Intensive, Chairing the Board, Mastering Disruption, Advanced Health and Safety Governance, Public Company Directorship and State Sector Governance.
  3. The candidate must submit a reflective review - outlining a governance challenge they have faced and their approach to dealing with it.
