Overview

A workshop facilitated by Dr Sina Cotter Tait  and Caren Rangi providing an opportunity to build a stronger network of Pacific Peoples in governance in Aotearoa New Zealand and to discuss the opportunities and issues being faced. This workshop will establish the foundations of a framework by discussing what actions can be taken to assist with building the pipeline for Pacific governors and how to educate the general governance community of the value of Pacific People on boards.

Speakers

Dr Sina Cotter Tait CMInstD

A proud daughter of Otautahi-Christchurch, Sina has over 20 years' experience as a professional civil engineer and construction manager.  She currently serves on the boards of several infrastructure and engineering-related organisations, as well as running her own engineering consultancy offering advisory services on infrastructure and projects.

In 2021, Sina was appointed by Minister Robertson to the board of Te Waihanga (the Infrastructure Commission). She has twice been awarded the Engineering New Zealand President’s Gold Medal, and was the 2021 Governance NZ Women on Boards Emerging Leader. Sina’s governance interests are focussed on infrastructure and community impact, and sees great opportunities in the construction and infrastructure sectors to benefit from a change in culture.

Sina believes in the responsibility for infrastructure leaders to lead on wider societal issues, including education, infrastructure and equity, and currently sponsors the Cotter Tait scholarship at UC for Māori and Pasifika engineering students who aspire to make a difference in the world.

Caren Rangi ONZM MInstD

Caren Rangi is an experienced public sector governance practitioner, a qualified chartered accountant and a proud Cook Islands Maori. In 2018, she was conferred with an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to governance and the Pacific community and is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and a Member of the Institute of Directors.

Currently Caren is the Chair of the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa and of Pacific Homecare Services, a Board member of Te Papa Tongarewa (the Museum of New Zealand), and of the Massey University Council, and Director of Pacific Co-operation Broadcasting Ltd.  Her previous governance roles include Chair of the Pacific Business Trust, Board member of NZ On Air (Irirangi Te Motu) and founding member of the Charities Registration Board.  This year Caren has joined the inaugural boards of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Economic Development Agency and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Recovery Agency, dealing with post-cyclone work.

Caren believes good governance matters because boards make decisions every day that affect peoples' lives and livelihoods, and in this complex world we now live in, robust decisions help keep us all safe. Her other passions are her Cook Islands culture and language, good food and wine, and time spent with family and good friends.
