Overview

The Chapter Zero NZ Board Toolkit centres on a simple five-step approach designed to enable boards and directors to take timely, positive and decisive climate action within their organisations.

In this session, facilitated by Judene Edgar CMInstD, you will receive a comprehensive overview of the Board Toolkit, and have the opportunity to hear from experienced chair and director Brian Wood CFInstD about his ongoing climate change journey, including valuable insights and lessons learned so far.

You will leave equipped with a practical action plan to help your board get started. We encourage you to bring other members of your board along to get the discussion going before you even leave the room.

Brian Wood

CFInstD

Brian Wood is an experienced professional director and an infrastructure specialist with a demonstrated history of working in the utilities industry.  For the past fifteen years, Brian has served on a range of local government, listed and privately owned companies – both as a director and chair.

Brian’s executive career had spanned the public service, local government and the private sectors where he has been involved in and led change, with a focus on establishment of trading activities within local Government.  As the Chief Financial Officer, he led the development of Dunedin City Holdings Ltd (DCHL) and its subsidiaries in 1991.

After a period as CEO of Southland District Council, Brian moved to the private sector in 1999 and took on the role of NZ Country Manager of MWH (now Stantec).  Over a period of 8 years he grew that business from 330 to 800 staff before being promoted to Managing Director Asia Pacific in 2005 with responsibility for 1500 staff and revenues of US$200 million.

In 2008 Brian decided to pursue a career in governance building on his experience as a CEO and his earlier experience in developing the DCHL group companies. A highlight of his governance career was his time on the Port Lyttelton board where he was part of the team that rebuilt the Port following the 2011 earthquakes. Brian was also a member of the Insurance Committee that dealt with the Underwriters and finally settled the Port’s claim of $460 million.  Brian oversaw the setup of the Project Management Office which was responsible for delivery of the rebuild and represented the Board in monitoring progress. All projects came in on time and budget.

Brian’s governance experience has also been in and around the electricity industry and he has been a director of Alpine Energy Ltd, Aurora Energy Ltd and Mainpower Ltd, and chaired Delta Utility Services Ltd which provides lines maintenance and engineering services to Network Tasman and Aurora. Currently, Brian is Chair of the Project Steering Group for the construction of a windfarm at Mt Cass on behalf of Mainpower.

Brian is a Chartered Fellow of the IoD and has been a member for over 30 years.  He holds a Master of Business Administration from Otago University.
