Overview

Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on one of the most significant challenges, and opportunities, facing New Zealand's economy.

New Zealand's economic future depends on its ability to compete internationally. Yet despite decades of policy effort, export growth has remained stubbornly difficult to sustain. In 2023, exports accounted for just 24% of GDP, below the OECD average and little changed from levels reached two decades ago. As the Government pursues its goal of doubling exports over the next decade, a critical question remains: what will it take to achieve sustained export growth?

Drawing on research into free trade agreements, export capabilities, barriers to internationalisation, technology entrepreneurship, export promotion programmes, and trade policy responses to COVID-19, this presentation will explore the factors that enable, or constrain, export success.

For directors, the discussion raises important questions about competitiveness, growth, resilience, and long-term value creation. What capabilities will New Zealand firms need to succeed internationally? Are current policy settings and support mechanisms fit for purpose? And what role should boards play in shaping export ambition and readiness?

Directors' Deep Dive events are smaller interactive discussion-style sessions where you will be encouraged to ask questions and actively contribute your perspectives.

Lunch will be provided.
