Richard Westlake

MA (Oxon), CFInstD, MAICD

Richard is a Chartered Fellow of the IoD. He has over 25 years’ experience as a director and board chair, and has been a facilitator for the IoD for more than 15 years. Based near Wellington he currently chairs the boards of New Zealand Home Loans Limited and Samaritans Aotearoa New Zealand.

Until recently, Richard was independent chair of Careerforce Industry Training Organisation and Co-op Money NZ, and he has chaired a range of other organisations, including Intergen Ltd, the NZ Telecommunications Forum and Canterbury Opera. He was also the establishment chair for two state-owned enterprises, MetService and Quotable Value. Among other roles, Richard was the first independent director of the Dairy Goat Co-operative (NZ) Limited, a founding independent director of Kiwibank Limited and the only non-Asian director of a large bank in the Philippines, RCBC.

Richard provides governance advisory services throughout New Zealand, South-East Asia and Australia. His main aim as a director and chair is to help the company’s chief executive to succeed, and to ensure the board contributes to "building tomorrow’s company from today’s,” by acting as an enabler rather than a sea anchor. Richard believes effective governance is often invisible to the outside world, while the long-term and devastating consequences of governance failures are very clear to see.
