Engaging with Māori is essential but it’s a complicated space to navigate.
Prominent local director Ruma Karaitiana leads this session sharing his governance insights on what engaging effectively with Māori looks like. He will touch on aspects of the legislative framework in addition to what directors need to know about working with mana whenua, building the relationships they need to ensure good governance within a cultural context.
Ruma, a professional director joined the IoD in 1993. He is Chair of the commercial arm of Rangitāne o Manawatū iwi, Chair of Education Services Limited and Chair of the Central Energy Trust. He has worked in governance for thirty years and served on many boards’ working parties and advisory groups including the Board of ACC.
He currently serves on the Board of Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (the former Correspondence School) and is an appointed member of the Palmerston North City Council Economic Committee.
Prior to governance, Ruma spent 25 years in Chief Executive roles in economic development; education and training – including 10+ years as Chief Executive of the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation; FMCG; and the health and disability sector.
He still finds time to indulge in his life-long passion for the visual and performing arts as well as spending as much time as possible enjoying his extended family.
